IMPACT-HIV

Interdisciplinary Modelling for the Prevention, Care and Treatment of HIV (IMPACT-HIV) is a collaboration of HIV researchers of the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV and AIDS and mathematicians of the Complex Systems Modeling Group (CSMG) at the IRMACS Centre of Simon Fraser University. Complex problems presented by the HIV epidemic are demanding increasingly comprehensive and powerful methods. The IMPACT-HIV group relies on extensive expertise of its members in mathematical modeling, analytical techniques, computational methods and the biological, clinical, epidemiological, social and operational aspects of the HIV epidemic to address HIV-related issues in Canada and elsewhere.

Three main research areas include:

  1. Mathematical modeling of the spread and control of HIV among injection drug users;
  2. Estimating HIV incidence and the proportion of undiagnosed HIV infections;
  3. Estimating the impact of expanding access to highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) on the utilization and costs of acute care services provided to individuals infected with HIV in British Columbia.

The modeling process incorporates a multitude of methods such as mathematical analytical techniques, ordinary and delay differential equation models, network models, agent-based simulations, queuing networks and operational research approaches.
