The BC-CfE's AIDS Research Program conducts research within the context of clinical care at the John Ruedy Immunodeficiency Clinic (IDC) and the St. Paul's Hospital inpatient HIV/AIDS ward (10-C).
The research team includes individuals with expertise in all areas of HIV care, with special emphasis on primary care, infectious diseases, respiratory medicine, lipid disorders, counselling and psychology, and clinical trial operations.
The core responsibilities of the AIDS Research Program include:
- Design and implement randomized controlled trials
- Develop strategies for optimizing the use of investigational and newly available antiretrovirals
- Examine pharmacokinetics of antiretroviral drugs
- Study treatment and complications of hepatitis co-infection
- Undertake observational studies of HIV-related immune reconstitution syndromes
- Surveillance of side-effects and toxicities of investigational and newly available antiretrovirals
