Dr. Art Poon works as an Associate Research Scientist (bioinformatics) for the BC-CfE's Laboratory Program. He is responsible for the development, testing, and implementation of computational and statistical methods for HIV-1 genetic sequence analysis. His research interests include virus evolution, phylogenetics, population genetics, bioinformatics, machine learning, software development, and parallel computing.
While working as a Post-Doctoral Employee at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, Dr. Poon co-developed HYPHY, a free multiplatform computational phylogenetics software package intended to perform maximum likelihood analyses of genetic sequence data. This software is equipped with an extensive toolkit for hypothesis testing and machine learning, has over 6500 registered users, and has been cited by over 600 peer-reviewed scientific journal articles.
Dr. Poon was the recipient of a Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR) Fellowship Award [and currently holds a CIHR Operating Grant].
